Lithium Batteries are wide spread in today's consumer applications like cell phone, portable computers and cameras. However, the market share of larger format batteries is quiet small. A lot of applications are still dominated by Lead Acid, NiCd and NiMH batteries. Besides the higher price for Li batteries, there are also technological reasons like performance (cycle and calendar life time) and safety problems why Lithium batteries did not yet conquer these applications. System integration on a materials and component level is a key to solve these technical challenges. Only the choice of optimal adjusted materials and components, i.e. cathode, anode, separator and electrolyte, both cycle and calendar life time as well as safety can be improved so that also large format batteries can be used in application like power tools, uninterrupted power supply, e-bikes, light and especially also hybrid electric vehicles.
