The Test Projects of Building the Straw-bale Houses in Japan

This paper describes the straw-bale projects in Japan from the summer in 2000 to March in 2002. The straw―bale buildings have been popular as the ecological architecture in the world. But, in Japan this architecture isn't popular yet. The straw-bale is a natural material and has a good material for insulation of the wall. If the straw-bale wall is broken, we can use the bale as the good compost for the organic agriculture. As we can get a lot of straw-bale after harvesting rice or wheat each year, we can get a lot of material for building each year. We have tried to construct the straw-bale buildings as the test case in Japan for two years around Japan. We would like to look for the way to construct the straw-bale houses in Japanese style. This paper showed the process, the way to build and the feature of temperature and humidity of straw-bale wall in the three case projects, PCCJ, Yamaguchi exhibition and Bito-cho. We can recognize that it is most possible to build the straw-bale house in Japan.
