Prognosis of Wind Energy Use in India

India is largely a power deficient country. To overcome this, government has provided special emphasis to generate power from renewables. Among the different renewable energy sources in India, wind energy is currently making a significant contribution to the installed capacity of power generation, and is emerging as a competitive option.rnHarnessing wind energy has come a long way in India and during last three decades there has been tremendous development in both technology of energy conversion and identification of suitable windy sites. India has been rated as one of the promising countries for wind power development.rnThe government has introduced a package of incentives which has provided this sector really strong motivations and steadily a conducive environment for commercial exploitation of this resource has evolved. However, host of issues are still involved in this high potential high growth area.rnThe paper aims to discuss the various issues pertaining to development of wind energy in the country along-with the various policy options and business opportunities available for global manufacturers / service providers. The paper shall also discuss ONGC's experience in the area of wind energy.
