Recent work on strong coupling exciton-polariton phenomena in semiconductor microcavities is reviewed. The reasons why microcavities lead to directly observable, polarion-related phenomena, as opposed to the situation in bulk materials or quantum wells, are explained. We then describe the results of experiments where the strong coupling nature of the excitations manifests itself, with particular reference to the effects of disorder and the in-plane dispersion.
