In Denmark the wastewater treatment plants pay volume based taxes for sewage discharging to thernreceiving water. Part of the waste water, which is running to the waste water treatment plant, is intrudingrnwater consisting of infiltrated water from the ground and inflows due to faulty connections from the storm andrndrainage systems to the sanitary sewer networkrnIn the sewer network the intruding water causes increased pumping costs, risks of flooding in the sanitaryrnnetwork and – to a minor degree – increased combined sewer overflows.rnThere are both economical and environmental incentives for reducing intruding water to the sewer systems.rnKrüger A/S uses the “IK-Tracer” method for localization and measurement of infiltration of ground water tornthe sewer system and for localisation of faulty connections. The method is based on injection at a constantrnrate of a fluorescent tracer (Rhodamine) in an upstream manhole and subsequent sampling in downstreamrnmanholes for measurement of concentration of the dye and thereby the dilution and flow.rnThe oral presentation at the NODIG 2002 international conference will describe the ”IK-Tracer” method andrnexperiences from selected investigations of Danish sewer systems.
