摘要

Today, preserving, using drinking water rationally and eliminating water loss are becomingmulti-sectors’ primary concern all over the world. The considerable amount of water loss due to theruptures of the aging distribution networks is challenging the water utilities and authorities. The first andmost difficult issue is how to find breaks among a vast water main, whose pipes are often made ofvarious materials and buried at different depths. This paper places emphasis on several efficientgeophysical methods, compares them, and suggests some ways to combine these methods. The paperalso provides a Hungarian case study, which would be solid evidence for water leakage detection inHungary, one of the most famous country for water resource management. In addition, the authors haveput forward several sensible hypotheses to partly account for possible causes of this deteriorated waterinfrastructure that exist throughout the world. Several geotechnical factors and possibly relevantgeotechnical testing methods are also referred put forward for further studies.
