Several security related applications are based on laser sources emitting in the short wavelength infrared (SWIR, 1.4–3 μm) or the mid wavelength infrared (MWIR, 3–5 μm) regime. Depending on the requirement of the specific application, the simultaneous use of multiple spectral lines at different wavelengths is often required. The simplest way to achieve multi wavelength emission is the combination of multiple laser sources which beams are superimposed into one multi spectral output beam. However, using conventional solid state lasers this solution often results in large and bulky laser systems. Semiconductor lasers, on the other hand, offer a high miniaturization potential which allows for the realization of low footprint sized laser modules.
