In this paper, we attempt to envision — in the spirit of a mind experiment — a specific and practicable engineering course (an engineering studio) using as our guide the basic principles of John Dewey's educational philosophy, which continues to influence all levels of American education (as can be seen, for example, in references to his ideas on education in the Boyer Report).
