For bridge erection in the extremely cold winters of the Canadian North, ice can sometimes be an ally. Icernhas frequently been used as a platform to support very heavy construction loads and is often the mostrneconomical method of bridge erection when suitable conditions prevail. The technique for building icernbridges is described. Topics covered also include site assessment, bearing capacity theory, and therninspection and maintenance of ice bridges. Examples of several steel bridges erected off the ice, illustraternthis method of construction.
