Improving our Nation's Infrastructure with High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Pipe

As the emphasis of homeland security and assuring our basic utility resources arernoperated and maintained in a safe and efficient manner become a major concern, thernimportance of selecting the optimum piping material using today's various installationrntechniques cannot be overemphasized. The use of polyethylene pipe to improve ourrnnation's infrastructure has grown considerably over the past forty years. Factors drivingrnthis growth have included polyethylene pipe's versatility, material improvements,rnstandards development, expansion of innovative construction techniques and growingrnconcerns over the integrity of an aging infrastructure. This presentation will highlight thernvarious property advantages of HDPE that make it an excellent piping material forrnconsideration when designing a new or replacement piping system. Additionally, thernpresentation will provide case studies from major pipe producers where HDPE pipernsystems were specified and installed using various techniques such as horizontalrndirectional drilling, slip lining, and pipe bursting.rnThrough the information presented at this seminar, the participant will gain a betterrnunderstanding on the benefits of HDPE piping systems and the specific factors such asrndesign considerations, construction techniques, and overall system costs that provides anrnengineering basis by which HDPE pipe is specified, selected, and utilized.
