摘要

Bechtel Hanford, Inc. (BHI), under contract with U. S. Department of Energy (DOE), has committed to identifyrnareas of Environmental Remediation (ER) activities that would lead to potential waste minimization and, as such, bernidentified and reported as a waste reduction activity.rnBHI has developed a highly successful Pollution Prevention Program to minimize waste during ER activities at thernHanford Site. A key element of the Pollution Prevention Program is the integration of several techniques to identifyrnand achieve waste reductions. These waste reductions are attributed to application of some innovative approaches atrnthe Hanford Site, which include adoption of systematic Value Methodology (VM), instituting the data qualityrnobjective (DQO) process, partnering with regulators, and deploying innovative technology.rnThrough the deployment of above-mentioned approaches, 20 waste streams were selected for further detailed study, rnout of 57 potential waste streams identified for waste reduction.rnUnder detailed study, several leading "Options" were identified, analyzed, and carefully evaluated for each of thern20 waste streams, using rough order of magnitude (ROM) estimates for each of the selected options. In generatingrnthese estimates a 15-year life cycle was selected, based upon Soil Re mediation Tri-Party Agreement compliance.rnIn the final analysis, seven waste minimization opportunities were identified and recommended for implementationrnin support of ER Project waste minimization efforts. The potential minimum savings in these areas are estimated atrn$2 million per year.
