A simulation conceptual model is a simulation developer's way of transformaing modeling requirements into a detailed design framework, from which the software, hardware, networks. and systems/equipment that will make up the simulation can be built. Part 1 of this paper discusses fundamental issues in simulation conceptual model developmetn with guidelines for conceptual mdoel decomposition, for abstraction in describing simulation element,s and for documenting the conceptual model. developmetn of an explicit conceptual model that is complete, consistent, clear, and correct will cause most deficiencies in simulation requirements to become evident, as discussed in part 2 of the paper. Detection and correction of such requirements deficiencies early is important for affordable, successful simulation development since the majority of software faults are attributed to requirements deficiencies. A high quality conceptual model can improve the quality of simulation requirements, thereby reducing simulation development costs, which is addressed in part 3 of the paper. A quality conceptual mdoel rovides a solid basis for judgment about simulation capabilities for conditions not specifically tested, and can contribute substantially to confidence in simulation results - this enhances simulation value.
