In view of the above, it is apparent that the presence of humic substances, the formation of disinfection byproducts, and the presence of biofilms in distribution systems will most likely be problems that utility systems will have to contend with for many years. Although there is no "quick fix" to any of these potential problems that will absolutely work for every system, it is clear that the presence of humic substances and the bioavailability of these complex compounds can be somewhat controlled by the use of disinfectants and corrosion control programs.
