The protection of sensitive electronic components from voltage transients is important in the automotive and semiconductor industries. Voltage transients arise from, but are not limited to, energizing transformers, switch arcing, alternator field decay, inductive switching and mutual coupling. Since most semiconductors are intolerant to voltage transients in excess of their ratings, varistors are required to provide protection.
