Saab Rosemount Marine has, in the latest released generation of radar based marine tank gauging system—TankRadar STaR, developed a technical solution that, for the first time, makes it possible to meet regulatory requirements while using one single tank penetration for independent cargo level gauging, high level alarm sensor, over-fill alarm sensor and/or redundant (secondary) cargo level gauging. This solution with a single tank penetration is challenging the same safety and reliability as solutions that require several tank penetrations.rn TankRadar STaR comprises up to three electrically independent radar gauges in a common mechanical housing. Separate power supplies and communication connections enable each tank gauge to perform its functions even in the unlikely event that one or both of the other radar gauges fail. Each radar circuit is transmitting/receiving “independent” microwaves to and from the tank through a common tube and antenna. Class type approvals are issued, and Lloyds Register of Shipping (02/00039) has approved it for all rules and notations requiring independency of sensors including IMO IBC, IMO IGC and USCG VECS requirements.rnThe TankRadar STaR is currently released and in operation only for Oil Tankers, Product Tankers and Chemical Carriers. When released for Liquefied Gas Carriers as a follower to TankRadar CTS, the features described here will have a significant impact on use and design of CTS.rn This invention will provide independent primary, secondary and tertiary readings automatically. The feature will enable reduced time in port by increasing safety, reliability and accuracy of the CTS. For example, any of the following features can be configured in a single system:rn1. primary & secondary gauging by independent gauges in same “hole” in the tankrn2. main and spare gauge continuously in operationrn3. level gauging, high level alarm and/or overfill alarm independently in same “hole” in the tankrn4. increased accuracy by parallel gauging.
