COACHING EFL STUDENT WRITERS TO BE EFFECTIVE PEER REVIEWERS IN THE WRITING PROCESS

摘要

Peer review,which takes place exclusively between students in pairs who read each other's papers and provide feedback tO the writer with the benefits of reducing students'writing apprehension,increasing their sense of audience,facilitating their transition from writerbased prose to reader-based prose,promoting their writing fluency,etc.,is becoming an increasingly common pedagogy both in L1 and L2 writing instruction.As a key component of the process writing approach and a useful writing instruction tool,peer review is more frequently introduced into EFL writing classroom.Unfortunately,peer review activity often turns out to be an unsatisfactory experience for EFL student writers and a frustrating one for writing instructors as well.Both teachers and students express their reservations about the efficacy of such a writing tool in EFL context.The key issue is that teachers fail tO coach students tO be effective peer reviewers in the whole writing process.This paper demonstrates ideas and methods of coaching EFL student writers tO effectively review their peers’papers in an attempt tO better the content and conventions of their written work and promote their overall writing proficiency.
