Effects of intensive blood glucose control on vascular outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus:results of the ADVANG trial

BackgroundAmong patients with type 2 diabetes，effects of intensive glucose control on major vascular outcomes remain uncertain．Methods11140 patients with type 2 diabetes were randomized to intensive glucose control using gliclazide (modified-release) and other drugs as required to achieve HbA1c≤6．5％，or to standard control．Primary endpoints were composites of major macrovascular (cardiovascular death，non-fatal myocardial infarction，non-fatal stroke) and major microvascular events (new or worsening nephropathy or retinopathy)，assessed jointly and separately．ResultsAfter a median of 5 years fol low-up，mean HbAlc was lower in the intensive than in the standard group (6．5％VS．7．3％)．Intensive control reduced the combined endpoint of major macrovascular and microvascular events (18．1％VS．
