Effects of intensive blood glucose control on vascular outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus:results of the ADVANG trial
BackgroundAmong patients with type 2 diabetes, effects of intensive glucose control on major vascular outcomes remain uncertain.Methods11140 patients with type 2 diabetes were randomized to intensive glucose control using gliclazide (modified-release) and other drugs as required to achieve HbA1c≤6.5%,or to standard control.Primary endpoints were composites of major macrovascular (cardiovascular death,non-fatal myocardial infarction,non-fatal stroke) and major microvascular events (new or worsening nephropathy or retinopathy),assessed jointly and separately.ResultsAfter a median of 5 years fol low-up,mean HbAlc was lower in the intensive than in the standard group (6.5%VS.7.3%).Intensive control reduced the combined endpoint of major macrovascular and microvascular events (18.1%VS.
