Silica-polystyrene composite particles

The synthesis of silica-polystyrene composite particles by dispersion polymerization of styrene in a mixture of ethanol and water is described. The silica beads are modified before polymerization using the 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate coupling agent. Composite particles with different shapes and different numbers of silica beads are obtained. The evolution of the shape and composition of the composite particles is studied as a function of three main parameters, namely, the silica beads size and concentration, the solvent composition and the nature or amount of stabilizer.
