A composite comprising an exfoliated graphite support material coated with ZnO nanoparticles and having a degree of graphitization, g, in the range of 50 to 93% obtained by XRD Rietfeld analysis. These complexes are prepared by three different methods: A) a (new) method comprising the following successive steps: i) dissolving a Zn(II) salt in a solvent; ii) adding graphite and a base simultaneously; iii) stirring the mixture under the influence of ultrasound; iv) removing the solvent from the suspension; or B) a (free) process comprising the following successive steps: i) suspending graphite in a solvent and exfoliating under the influence of ultrasonic waves; ii) simultaneously adding a Zn(II) salt and a base to form nano-ZnO particles; iii) stirring the mixture; iv) removing the solvent from the suspension; or C) a (post) method comprising the steps of: i) mixing a Zn(II) salt and a base in a solvent in a first reactor to form nano-ZnO particles; ii) exfoliating the graphite by ultrasonic influence in a second reactor; iii) mixing both the suspensions of i) and ii) together; iv) removing the solvent from the suspension after step iii). These coated composites can be tempered, re-coated and re-tempered in a further step.
