Systems, methods, and computer readable media are provided for designing experiments on an organism at a first scale to generate first scale performance data used to predict performance of the organism at a second, larger scale. The design includes determining the first scale selection condition based at least in part on a contribution of the second scale condition to a performance parameter of the organism at the second scale. The first selection condition comprises one or more proxies to the second scale condition that are not replicable at the first scale. The design determines the selection parameters of the first scale based at least in part on computer modeling of the organism's metabolism on the second scale.
