A thermal impact assembly 100 for a sample separation apparatus 10 may have a control unit 70 to i) heat and/or cool a fluidic sample and/or mobile phase; independently of ii) heating and/or cooling a sample separation unit 30. The apparatus may be for liquid chromatography or gas chromatography; for microfluidics; or have a selection valve 86 which can be heated/cooled. A first heater/cooler 80 may be upstream of the second heater/cooler 82; first and second heater/coolers may be within a thermal compartment or oven 84, or a heater/cooler may be only partially inside the compartment. The second heater/cooler may thermally impact multiple chromatography columns (figure 6). First and second heater/coolers may overlap. Thermal impacting may be driven by gas convection around a heat exchanger (figure 8). A combined heater and cooler may be used (figure 10). Programming of the controller 70 may emulate programming of another controller (figure 9).
