The present invention relates to a method for determining spark advance as a function of torque of a spark ignition engine. For the set of fixed parameters representing the operating point of the engine, including at least the load, when the torque is above the threshold, the advance is calculated as a function of torque according to the inverse equation of the parabolic equation. According to the invention, when the torque is lower than the threshold, the advance angle is calculated as a function of torque according to the inverse equation of the linear equation. The values obtained are higher than those calculated by the inverse equation of the parabolic equation to avoid underestimating the latter. The invention can be used in a method for controlling an engine in which the torque of the engine is rapidly reduced by increasing the ignition advance momentarily. [Selected figure] Figure 4
