The invention relates to the non-therapeutic cosmetic use of an extract of Cistus monspeliensis for enhancing and/or maintaining the tissue homeostasis on the skin and/or mucous membranes and/or skin appendages, by increasing and/or maintaining the barrier function and/or the cellular differentiation of the skin and/or mucous membranes and/or skin appendages. The invention further relates to a non-therapeutic cosmetic care method particularly comprising the topical application of the C. monspeliensis extract or of a cosmetic composition comprising said extract. Also disclosed is the use of the C. monspeliensis extract for preventing and/or treating illnesses caused by a reduction in the gene and/or protein expression of ECM1, advantageously lichen sclerosus or lipoid proteinosis, and/or for preventing and/or treating scars.
