The device includes: i. a plurality of lifting jacks (5) adapted to lift a railway vehicle (7) above a railway track (10); ii. a plurality of pairs of transverse rails (12), each pair of transverse rails forming a transverse track adapted to be placed under the railway vehicle (7) once the railway vehicle (7) has been raised above the railway track (10) by means of the lifting cylinders (5); iii. a plurality of carriages (14) for moving the rail vehicle (7) along the transverse tracks; iv. a plurality of double-acting cylinders (16) adapted to move the rail vehicle (7) out of the railway track (10) and along the transverse tracks, each double-acting cylinder (16) being provided with means for fixing to at least one transverse rails on the one hand and at least one of the movement carriages on the other hand.
