A method is disclosed for determining an appropriate set of parameters for operating a light source in a photothermal targeted treatment system to target a chromatophore embedded in a medium. The method comprises the steps of: 1) administering at least one laser pulse from a light source at a preset power level to the location to be treated, wherein the preset power level is below a known damage threshold; 2) following the execution of at least one laser pulse, measuring the skin surface temperature at the location to be treated; 3) estimating the relationship between the parameters for operating the light source and the skin surface temperature; and 4) defining a safe operating range for the parameters for operating the light source to avoid thermal damage to the medium at the location to be treated, while still effectively targeting the chromatophore when implementing the treatment protocol. .
