The systems and methods described herein are configured to estimate nominal stresses using finite element (FE) stress calculations, without manual calculations, specific mesh density requirements, or identification of specific geometric parameters such as plate thickness. The systems and methods described herein can be used to identify nominal stresses in welded structures and components and non-welded components with stress concentrators from other sources. The systems and methods described herein also allow for readily available FE stress results to be used in a consistent manner, as well as provide user feedback regarding the accuracy of the nominal stress approximation. Moreover, the systems and methods described herein are generally faster and less error-prone than existing techniques, and are relatively insensitive to the mesh density of FE stress calculations.
