The invention concerns preferably a method for measuring the axial displacement of a shaft stored in a housing, which is characterized by the enclosure being clamped horizontally with the shaft stored horizontally in a clamping device. After adjusting the direction of force input to the central axis of the shaft, a first force shall be applied along a first direction of force input until a first test force is reached and a second force shall be applied in the opposite direction along a second direction of force input,until a second test force is reached. During the execution, the measuring device measures the axial position change of the shaft relative to the housing in order to determine the axial shiftability of the shaft to the housing. In another aspect, the invention concerns a device for measuring the axial displacement of a shaft stored in a housing, preferably by the inventive method.
