An apparatus and method for converting aromatic compounds, comprising / using: a xylene separation unit (10); an isomerization unit (11); a first alkylation reaction section (13) adapted to treat at least part of the cut comprising toluene (23) with a source of CO (30) and produce a first alkylation effluent (31) comprising paratolualdehyde; a hydrogenation reaction section (14) adapted to treat at least part of the first alkylation effluent (31) comprising paratolualdehyde in the presence of a source of hydrogen (33) and produce a hydrogenation effluent (34) comprising paraxylene sent to the xylene separation unit (10); and a second alkylation reaction section (15) adapted to treat at least a portion of the cut comprising benzene (22) with a source of ethanol (36) and produce a second alkylation effluent (37) comprising ethylbenzene sent to the isomerization unit (11).
