PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of examining activated sludge and identifying microorganisms with activated sludge abnormal factors, as well as a method of optimizing the operation of an active sludge treatment apparatus and a method of improving operations, with a simple method without the need for detailed gene analysis of DNA and/or RNA and without specifying the name of the microorganism species.;SOLUTION: An activated sludge examination method is a method of examining activated sludge with an activated sludge treatment apparatus that determines abnormalities in the waste water treatment capacity of microorganisms of the activated sludge by comparing the quantitative ratio (rRNA/rDNA) of rRNA and rDNA thereof, or determines abnormalities in the waste water from changes in the number of rRNA bands of measured microorganism bands of rRNA of microorganisms of the activated sludge separated by nucleic acid electrophoresis.
