The invention concerns a substrate, in particular a component of a flow machine, made of a composite material with a ceramic matrix and a protective layer against environmental influences. The protective layer consists of a mixture of rare metal monosilicate and rare metal dissilicate in which the monosilicate is present to more than 50-molar%. In particular, such a layer is capable of effectively protecting the substrate from attack by calcium magnesium aluminium silicates (CMAS) at high temperatures. A method of producing the substrates is also indicated.
