The invention relates to a method for controlling a system (300) or a unit (310) for recognizing, testing, counting, calculating and sorting valuable objects, which can be automatically adapted to varying conditions of delivery and requirements. For this purpose, a controller (S) controls the conveying paths and handling steps within the unit (310) by means of conveying units (140, 141, 142, 143, 325 and T) and corresponding points (310) and optimizes them such that the valuable objects are conveyed to the treatment stations (P_n) necessary for the handling of the valuable objects. The control (S) also takes into consideration information on the components of the unit (310) and of the valuable objects supplied and to be delivered to ensure optimum handling of the valuable objects or to deliver ordered packs of valuable objects as quickly as possible. The unit (310) can be designed such that it can handle a broad range of tasks and/or process peak-load demands rapidly by a parallel connection of its components. This allows a reliable, safe and predictable operation.
