A lighting control system 1 comprises: a lighting load 11, a user-operable switch 9 for switching the lighting load on and off; and a detector 3, the detector having an occupancy detector element 5 and a control module 7, the detector element being arranged to generate an output dependent on it detecting the presence/absence of a person, and the control module being arranged to control the lighting load in response to the output of the detector element. The lighting control system is initially configured in presence mode, also known as fully automatic mode, but is configurable to absence mode, also known as semi-automatic mode. The lighting control system is arranged to change from presence mode to absence mode in response to the user-operable switch being operated to switch the lighting load.
