A method and system of authoring an audio signal into a haptic data file is disclosed. The audio signal is analysed by using filterbanks or by performing a spectrogram analysis on the audio signal. Transients in the audio signal are detected and processed. A haptic perceptual bandwidth of an electronic computing device having an embedded actuator is determined. A user interface allows modification of time- amplitude values and values of the transients. The authored time amplitude values are aggregated in an authored audio descriptor data, which is passed to a transformation module to fit the authored audio descriptor data into the haptic perceptual bandwidth. The transformation module implements algorithms to produce a transformed audio descriptor data. Finally, the transformed audio descriptor data is converted to the haptic data file.
