PROVIDING A TELE-IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE USING A MIRROR METAPHOR

A remote immersion environment is described that provides interaction between participants in a remote immersion session. This environment contains two or more facilities, each of which is associated with a participant. Each facility also includes a mirror function for presenting a three-dimensional virtual space for viewing by the local participant. Virtual space shows at least some of the participants as if they were physically present in the same place and looking in a mirror. The mirror function may be implemented as a combination of a translucent mirror and a display device, or only as a display device operating alone. According to another feature, this environment may present a virtual object in a manner that allows any of the participants of the remote immersion session to interact with the virtual object.
