This disclosure provides systems and procedures for reducing the impairment of exhaust valves. Procedures and systems shall be provided to identify when an engine cylinder exhaust valve does not function as desired while the engine is operated in such a way as to increase the temperature of an exhaust emission control device and to take appropriate mitigation measures. Thus, a procedure in one example involves adjusting a fuel quantity provided to each by a multitude of cylinders of an engine during an engine exhaust stroke,in response to an indication of impaired combustion due to a cylinder of the engine. In this way, the engine can continue to operate in order to increase the temperature of the exhaust system's emission control device, while alleviating the problem of impaired combustion.
