The present invention relates to urea- and/or urethane-substituted amides of the following formula (I). The radicals R1, Z1, R2, and Z2 comprise building blocks containing urea groups and/or urethane groups; The radicals R4, Z4, R5, and Z5 comprise an amide group-containing building block, and E is a carboxylic acid group or a salt thereof. The invention also relates to a rheology controlling agent consisting of or comprising an amide of formula (I). A further subject of the invention is a process for the preparation of rheology control agents, and urea- and/or urethane-substituted amides, and also the use of rheology control agents as thickeners, in particular liquid compositions, and also as liquid compositions themselves.
