Calcium carbonate.- To make whiting, chalk or the like is charged along with water into a wash-mill a, having mixing and stirring rakes and breakers or harrows b driven by gearing d, d1. The mixture passes out through an opening f covered with a strainer f1 arranged some distance above the bottom, to a second similar wash-mill e, from which the mixture passes out through a passage h to a trough j, which passes to the back and runs along the ends of a number of settling-tanks i. In this trough removable dams are placed so as to direct the liquid into any one or more of the longitudinal conduits k, from which it overflows a weir k1 to a conduit l, and thence down a series of holes m in the dividing-wall to near the bottom of the vats. From each vat the liquid can overflow to the next, and thence to a filter o. Doors p are provided for elearing out the deposit from the bottoms of the vats, which may be inclined to assist such cleaning out. The filters may consist of porous floors, through which the water is drawn by means of a pump. The water may be used over again.
