摘要
1656. Thommen, P. Jan. 23. Type-writers; linotype and like machines.-Relates to machines having series of rotatable discs, on which a line of types or matrices is set up, and an impression or cast taken from the set-up line. The discs 2, which are equal in number to the number of characters in any line, are placed side by side on a shaft 1, and the half of the circumference of each disc is formed with teeth and notches a. The types &c. for printing or casting are formed on the projections or teeth, and index characters are formed in the notches or recesses. When a printing-character of any disc is in position opposite the impression device I, the index character of that disc is visible through a slot or window 3, so that the set-up line may be verified. The discs are set in succession by operating key levers 23, 24, each of which lifts a transverse bar 19 under a pin 17. The bars 19 are each on pivoted arms 20. The pins 17 are arranged to slide radially in a frame formed of two curved bars 14, 15. The frame 14, 15 is moved transversely, by ratchet gear, to bring the row of pins 17 successively under the radial stop-pins 8 in transverse frames formed of fixed bars 4, 5, 6 arranged in a curved series. Spiral springs 9 surround the pins 8 and grip them with sufficient friction to hold them in raised position when operated. The discs 2 are rotated, at each depression of a key lever, by any suitable means, and a projection 21 on each disc engages a stop-pin 8 projected by the key mechanism. After the impression or cast, the whole of the raised pins 8 are returned by bars 10 sliding radially on the frames 4, 5 and having inclined ends 12 for depressing them against the pressure of springs 11.
