7749. Agar, T. F., [Gee, T. T.]. April 3. Straw-burning steam - generator furnaces.-The arrangements are shown, by way of example, as applied to a locomotive firebox. The ashpan a, with rear damper d and cleaning-doors e, is secured airtight to the angle-iron c, so that the incoming air must pass between the bars. The bearers g have inclined surfaces, which cause ashes to slide into the ashpan, while the bearer near the shoot k catches the short straw &c., and prevents it from reaching the ashpan without combustion. Suitable supports h secure the bearers to the firebox. The bearers have recesses, in which the heavy bars for burning straw may be placed and ledges for receiving additional bars for other fuel. The arch m is formed of corrugated plates in sections or of a single plate. Clearance upon the arch-supports is provided for expansion. The opening p against the tube-plate permits flames to ascend for aiding combustion. It also serves for cleaning purposes. A hanging plate q is provided for deflecting the gases. Provision for cleaning is provided by means of a small door at r.
