Drawing; planing.-Bright finished bolt beads and nuts are made by pushing forged or black heads or nuts through a tapered die D, which consolidates and polishes their faces, and through a planing-die B, the nut entering the die B before being free of the die D ; the planing operation may, however, be dispensed with, or be performed separately, a guide being then used in place of the die D, or several pairs of dies may be used. The punch A has a projection t to enter the hole in a nut, the die D is preferably parallel for some distance from its bottom, and the cutting- edge of the die B is raised slightly. The dies may be withdrawn from beneath the punch automatically or by means of a hand lever T to permit of the insertion of the work, or the nuts may be fed up to the stop m and in line with the punch and dies by means of a recessed block m1 secured to a plate h which is reciprocated along the guides g by means of a link R, a lever, and a cam. Soap suds or other lubricant is forced in through one of the radial holes leading to the space between the dies B, D, the suds &c. washing the chips out through other openings, but according to the Provisional Specification a fixed or a reciprocated ejector may be used instead.
