Burner of Asbestos Threads more especially for use in Vaporising Perfumed or Antiseptic Liquids

Formaldehyde and like lamps; lighting burners by catalytic devices.-A burner for heating inhalations, perfumes, disinfectants, &c. consists of asbestos threads impregnated with salts of platinum, palladium, and the like, which, when slightly heated and placed over a spirit container, ignite the vapour rising from it. The burner generates formaldehyde when methyl alcohol is used instead of ordinary spirit. Fig. 1 shows the device as applied for heating a cup h containing a liquid the vapour of which is to be inhaled. The burner a is placed on the vessel containing spirit &c., which is ignited as described above. The burner consists of pieces a, Fig. 4, of asbestos cord between two twisted wires b. The ends of the pieces a are unravelled, and the brush-like piece is bent into a ring or other shape. The asbestos may be impregnated with the salts before or after spinning. A pivoted plate on the upper side of the spirit vessel slides beneath the burner when it is desired to extinguish it.
