Pianofortes.-In a grand-pianoforte action, the short arm of the jack 5 is connected by a loop 19 to one end of a spring 15, the other end of which is turned round a pin 20 on the short arm of the hammer-lever 7 and ends in a short portion 21. The spring is bent at the middle and connected by a loop to the stop 17. When the jack is set off by the button 14, it lifts the short arm of the hammer-lever 7 by means of the spring 15, so that the long arm of the lever has a descending motion when the hammer returns on to it, whereby trembling of the hammer is prevented. The tension on the hammer lever can be adjusted by turning the screw 23 so as to shorten the connexion 22, and the tension on the jack can be independently adjusted by altering the angle of the outer portion of the spring.
