Explosive gases, destroying. -For preventing the initiation or extension of explosions and for extinguishing fires in mines, potassium, ammonium, sodium, or other suitable alum or suitable salt, such as soda crystals, containing not less than 25 per cent of combined water, singly or mixed are distributed as powder or meal near shot-holes, on the roads, or on the surface or in cracks &c. in the seams. The alums or other salts may be placed on trays and suspended so as to be discharged by an incipient explosion or by a workman. The trays may be hinged to a suitable support and held by a prop which will be easily displaced by an explosion to discharge the material. Or the powder may be kept in convenient places in buckets or the like. The powdered salts may be placed near fires to prevent them from spreading. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of solutions of the salts.
