19,150. Smith, W. Aug. 20. Materials, fibrous; pulp, preparation of. - Papyrus is utilized as paper stock or half-stuff and for the manufacture of fuel. In the preparation of paper stock or half-stuff, the percentage of water is reduced by passing the stems through rollers or by any other mechanical means, and the material is boiled with caustic alkali, or by Eckman's or other well-known process, and then bleached. If the papyrus is desired for export, it is dried in the air or by artificial heat, after passing the stems through rollers, and is then baled. The roots are utilized as fuel for gas-producers and for suitable furnaces. The quantity of water in the roots is reduced by squeezing or by other methods.
