Cupping, creasing, and the like. -C a p s u l e s for bottles, soufflÚ cups, and the like are formed by the successive operation of two sets of members the first set acting on the edges of the blank disks only and the final set comprising pleating-blades which are forced against the cup in a direction which has a tangential component. As shown, the apparatus comprises a double plunger, the members a, b of which first descend together and force the paper through a bevelled portion g1 of a socket g, the paper being gripped between the flat bottom of plunger b and a spring-raised plunger r which also serves to eject the finished capsule. The blank is thus forced into a saucer-shape, and then the plunger a and a serrated die f pleat the edge of the capsule. The plunger b descends still further and the pleating operation is completed by a series of pleating blades k, Figs. 1 and 3, which are pivoted to a ring i and are actuated by the ascent of a ring m operated by a cam-actuated lever n which acts against springs q. The blades k force the material into oblique teeth on the plunger b, as shown in Fig. 3, so that each pleat is tucked between two adjoining pleats.
