R÷ntgen-ray tubes.-The hardness of the rays generated in a tube exhausted to a high vacuum is adjusted by passing a low-pressure exciting discharge of graduated intensity from an auxiliary cathode 3, which consists of platinum coated with metallic oxides and is heated to incandescence by a constant current. This discharge may pass to an auxiliary anode 4, arranged in a side chamber as shown, or placed between the main electrodes 1, 2, or it may pass to the anti - cathode 2. The auxiliary cathode is preferably connected to the main anode or anti-cathode.
