2612. Hill, R. N. March 21, 1912, [Convention date]. Recording signals. - Upon the operation of a selected signal 33 from a control station 5 an answer - back is given telephonically b y a buzzer 60, which agitates a microphone 46 so as to produce a tone in a receiver 18 at the control station. The signal 33 is selected by an impulse-sender 17, which controls a relay 15 for connecting a battery across the partyline 10, 11. The impulses energize a magnet 25, 26 which steps round a ratchet-wheel 27 to close a contact 29 at the selected station. A magnet 30 is thus bridged across the line and trips the signal 33, which in turn releases clockwork 39 for rotating the disks 35, 36. Local circuits for the buzzer 60 and microphone 46 are now completed through the spring 37, and the receiver 45 is bridged across the line through the springs 37, 38. The disk 36 serves to give a distinctive code character to the signal heard in the receiver 18. When the receiver 45 is lifted from the switch - hook 49, speaking- circuits are completed between the two stations, and the buzzer 60 is open - circuited at the contact 61.
