167,990. Kennedy, E. N., and Kennedy, G. A. Nov. 18, 1920. Stropping - apparatus.-Comprises a combined cleaning and stropping machine for the safety razor described in Specification 165,488, [Class 30, Cutlery]. The razor comprises a clamping- plate a, Figs. 1 and 10, having a longitudinal groove r, two blade-positioning studs b, Fig 4, and a central stud c screwed to receive the handle o. A guard-plate e is slidable along a retaining-plate k, which has slots m therein to allow the parts to assume the position shown in Fig. 4. The cleaning and stropping machine comprises a casing 10, Figs. 6, 7 and 10, in which are journaled two pairs of shafts 16, 17 rotatable, through gearing, by a crank 20 having a foldable handle 21. The shafts carry stropping-rollers 23, each having about one-half of its circumference covered with stropping-material 24, and spiral cleaning-brushes 25 each forming about two-thirds of a cylindrical brush. In the lid 11 of the casing is a slot 12 along which the handle of the razor is slid, and between the rollers and the brushes is a transverse partition 26 having therein a vertical slot 27 communicating with an horizontal aperture 28; a stop 15 is provided in the slot 12. A longitudinal guide-bar 29 is adapted to be engaged by the groove in the clamping-plate of the razor, and above the bar are a pair of parallel guides 29a shaped at 29b to retain the blade and the clamping-plate between the stropping-rollers. Rubber or like scrapers 31 are mounted in holders 32 slidable into the aperture 28 to remove soapsuds &c. from the blade as it is moved into position for stropping. Adjacent to the brushes are plates 36 slidable from above in guides 37 and having slots therein formed with brush-scraping edges 38 and guiding-edges 39, whereby refuse scraped from the brushes is deposited in troughs 40 mounted on or formed integral with the plates 36. At the front end of the casing a felt or like pad 44 is provided in a slot 43 to wipe the clamping-plate and the blade as the razor is moved into and out of the machine. A trough 47 is provided for spare blades. In operation, the razor is inserted in the slot 12 and the handle o is partly unscrewed. The razor is then moved inwards along the slot until it reaches the stop 15; the guard-plate e is, during this movement, detained between the brushes by the holders 32. The handle is then rotated, the brushes clearing the comb-like edges s of the guard-plate and the rollers stropping the blade. A ratchet may be provided to prevent rotation of the rollers &c. in the wrong direction. Leaf springs may be provided on each side of the slot 12 to press down and maintain the clamping- plate on the guide-bar.
