186,570. Krupp Akt.-Ges., F. Sept. 24, 1921, [Convention date]. Number-printing apparatus. - In apparatus, provided with more than one type-wheel, for automatically printing the results of measurement, particularly for leather measuring machines of the Sawyer class, each type-wheel is provided with a locking-device consisting of a ratchet-wheel and a detent, the locking devices being so dependent upon a single controlling-device that the type-wheels are locked in sequence commencing with the wheel of lowest denomination. The shaft b1 is flexibly driven by means of an arm s keyed to it and connected by a spring with the chain wheel B which rotates loosely on the shaft b1 and is driven from the adding-mechanism. Keyed to the shaft b1 is a driver b2 which bears in the direction of arrow x against a nut C mounted to move longitudinally on the threaded sleeve b4 of the driver b2 and on a bolt d1 mounted a disc D. To this disc is rigidly fixed a rack d2 of 300 teeth, comprising thirty plates d3, each having ten steps on the inner side. A weighted lever E, E1 pivoted at F carries a locking-pin e2 opposite the rack d2 and a roller e' engaging a cam g1 which is mounted on a hollow shaft G surrounding a shaft G3. Opposite the steps on the plates d3 is a pin h2 carried by a weighted lever H, H1 pivoted at F. This lever H, H1 carries at one end a roller h3 engaging a cam g2 on the shaft G and at the other end a toothed sector h5 gearing with a pinion J keyed to a type-wheel J' which carries ten types (0-9) for hundredths of a square metre. In the zero position, Fig. 3, the zero of this wheel is not exactly opposite the place where the impression is to be made, and the pin h2 is slightly distant from that step of the plate d3 lying nearest to it. The disc D is connected with the type-wheel D5 by an elastic coupling comprising a lug d' on disc D and a U-shaped flat spring K embracing two bolts d6 on the wheel D5. Carried by this wheel D5 are three series of types (each 0-9) for indicating tenths of a square metre, and a ratchet-wheel D' of thirty teeth so that to one tooth of D' correspond ten teeth of the rack d2. Opposite, the ratchet D' lies a locking- pin m2 carried by a weighted lever M, M1 which also has a roller m4 engaging a cam g6 on shaft G. When the pin e2 engages in the rack d2, the pin m2 is displaced relatively to the tooth point next to it by one-twentieth of the pitch of the teeth D', or one-twentieth plus whole tenths of this pitch. To the type-wheel D5 is fixed a pinion d8 gearing with a toothed wheel N in the ratio of 3 : 10. Connected with the wheel N by a U-shaped flat spring P is a type. wheel N' carrying ten types (0-9) for the whole square metres and carrying a ratchet-wheel N2, which is engaged by a pin q2 on the waighted lever Q, Q1 pivoted at m3 and having a roller q3 engaging a cam g4 @@ the shaft G. The cam g4 is wider than the cam g6, which in turn is wider than the cam g1. The ratchet-wheel N2 carries a roller T having fixed to it a band t3 supporting a weight T1. In the zero position the disc N' is not exactly in the printing position, but when the pin m2 enters a gap between two of the teeth D', the pin q2 is displaced relatively to the tooth point next to it by about one-twentieth of the pitch of teeth N' or one-twentieth plus whole tenths of this pitch. When measuring a piece of leather, the adding- mechanism drives the shaft b1 in the direction of the arrow x, which in turn rotates the disc D through the driver b2 and nut C. The disc D, through the fiexible coupling K, rotates the type-wheel D5 and through pinion d8 the wheel N, which then rotates, through the coupling P, the type-wheel N1 and the roller T, which latter winds up the band t3 and raises the weight T1. When the measuring operation is finished the shaft G3 is rotated, by hand or otherwise, in the direction of the arrow z, and the cam g1 releases the roller e3 and the lever E, E1 and allows the pin e2 to lock in the bottom of a gap between two of the teeth d2. Immediately afterwards the cam g2 releases the lever H, H' so that the pin h2 moves to the left and engages against that step on the plate d3 which has been brought exactly opposite to it by the pin e2 settling in the bottom of the gap. This causes the toothed sector h5 to rotate the pinion J and exactly set the " hundredths " type-wheel J1. On further rotation of the shaft G3 the cam g6 releases the leyer M, M1. The disc D and ratchet-wheel D' have already been adjusted and the locking-pin m2 then moves to the left and enters a gap between two of the teeth D', rotating the ratchet against the action of the coupling K so that the pin m2 enters the bottom of the gap, thus exactly setting the wheel D5. Finally upon further rotation of the shaft G3 the cam g4 releases the lever Q, Q1 so that the pin q2 exactly sets the type-wheel N' in a precisely similar manner as the type-wheel D5 was set. After the type. wheels have been locked, the machine is reversed so as to zeroize the indicating-disc of the adding mechanism. When this takes place the driver b2 is lifted off the nut C which, during one revolution of the shaft b1, is moved along the fixed bolt d1 in the direction of the arrow v and cut of the path of the driver b' owing to the rotation of the threaded sleeve b4 and to the fact that the nut C projected into this path an amount less than the pitch of the thread on b4. The shaft b' then rotates freely. After the printing operation, the whole revolution of the shaft G3 is completed so that the cams g2, g6, g1, g4 again engage their respective rollers, thus releasing the locking pins form the ratchets and allowing the weight T' to descend and rotate the type-wheels back to their zero positions.
