Separating by gravity.-An ejector, operated by compressed air, is used for delivering a sludge composed of sand, dust and the like mixed with water to settling tanks or to a tower in which it descends over baffles and from which it is discharged to settling apparatus. The compressed air is supplied to the ejector through a valve operated mechanically under the control of a timing-device. The arrangement is shown as applied to the treatment of sludge obtained by washing with water air carrying sand or dust from a shot blast machine. The sludge is delivered from a fan D, in which it is formed, into a hopper E and thence through a non-return valve into an ejector F. Air passes from compressors I to receivers J and through a control valve K and a pipe k to the ejector. The sludge is discharged from the ejector to a tower H fitted with baffles M which reduce the velocity of flow prior to passage over a shoot N to a series of settling-tanks O, P. Q. Settling tanks on rails or otherwise movable may be used.
